(14 September 2020)
Hosted by the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa (University of Pretoria)
This seminar, convened as part of the Freedom from Violence programme, was led by Dr Orly Maya Stern (author of the recently ICRC-prize-winning book Gender Conflict and International Humanitarian Law) and was the first of two sessions that looked at the Somali militant group al-Shabaab, using it as a case study to explore two separate issues. The first session looked at the Amnesty and rehabilitation programme for al-Shabaab defectors, using this case study to explore some international law rules around amnesty, as well as the peace versus justice debate.
